Venus de Milo X-rayed
Restore magic to the goddess of love.
Three stories
LEFT: Sketch by Ori Aum. Inspired by Venus de Milo, Ori reimagined the statue with a mask on. (I wish I can draw so well!)
MIDDLE: Sketch by Bowen Li. Bowen depicted a character from one of his favoraite mobile shooting gane, Brawl Stars. (Check it out gamers!)
RIGHT: Sketch by Senyan Luo. I wanted to capture the hardship of expressing romantic feelings for an introvert. When words elude her, she wishes if people could just see her heart.
The mash-up thought process
These are the pieces that I extracted from the three stories. The mash-up process is best summarized as scaffolding a series of ideas. I first chose the head from Ori's sketch because I am terrified of it. All statues with faded pupils remind me of the episode "Blink" from Doctor Who, those statues haunt me in my dreams to this day. Naturally, my next selection was the pair of cool sunglasses from Bowen's character to cover her eerie, pupilless eyes. This choice was followed by picking the legs from Bowen's character. They totally do not fit well with the statue, but I was tickled by the idea of revealing this funky costume beneath her toga. For the trunk, I chose the middle section from my sketch. Since Venus de Milo depicts the goddess of love, Aphrodite, it seems logical and serendipitous that she would be posing with a heart.

Reflection
The new story depicts Venus de Milo getting X-rayed. By works of magic,
we can now see the arms that were broken. They are always there,
guarding her precious heart full of love.
I had a blast working on this assignment. Although I try
to make sense of many random occurences in my life, it is a fun exercise
for my imagination to make a new story out of a bizarre combination.
Most importantly, I appreciate getting to know Ori and Bowen better
through this project, thank you for sharing your stories with me.
